Fortified Lviv – Walls, Arsenals and Towers

For centuries, Lviv was not only a major trading city but also a well-defended fortress. The tour begins beside the surviving remains of the city fortifications on Pidvalna Street, where it is easy to understand how Lviv's old defensive system was organised.

From there, we follow the former line of the walls and see the City Arsenal, the Royal Arsenal, the Gunpowder Tower and other surviving elements of the fortifications. You will learn where weapons and gunpowder were stored, where cannons were cast and how the city's craft guilds took part in its defence.

We will also talk about sieges and assaults, high and low defensive walls, towers, bastions and moats, and how the development of artillery gradually changed the way Lviv was protected.
